Blue-Green porridge on the shoreline? Blue-Green Algae blooms. Algal blooms vary in colour and appearance depending on quantity and species. Blue-green algae blooms in the Baltic Sea usually appear as a green-yellow soup or a mass of blue-green threads. Toxicity varies between different species, but can also vary within the same species.

You can detemine, if the algae you've spotted is blue-green by doing the following two tests.

Jar-test

Take some algae water into a glass jar. Leave the water in the jar for one hour. If you notice green sprinkles in the water, you have blue-green algae in your jar and shore.

Stick-test

Try the algae-mass with a stick. Is the mass thick or solid? Can you pick the mass up with the stick? If the mass disperses, when you try it with a stick, you have blue-green algae in your shore. If you the mass is solid and you can pick it up, it’s regular macroalgae.
