Marine research in a historical Seili island

Marine scientists and students have conquered the premises formerly inhabited by lepratic and mental patients. They have the priviledge of working in an idyllic Seili island. The island is famous for its beautiful landscape and rich history of being the isolation site for lepratic and mental patients.

The Archipelago Research Institute of the University of Turku carries out multisectoral research of the Baltic Sea, with special focus on the Archipelago Sea. The research

covers ecology, hydrology, ecological modelling, culture and archaeology. Long-term monitoring on sea temperature, salinity and planctonic communities serves assessment of changes in the marine environment, caused e.g. by climate change.

Examples of the ongoing research projects:

Project: Assessment and modelling of Baltic Ecosystem Response (AMBER)

  • Aim: To get a holistic view of the interactions between the drainage area and the Baltic Sea, and the impact of climate change on the state of the Baltic Sea. Modelling tools are used in the assessment.

Project: Baltic Sea experiment (Baltex)

  • Aim: Impacts of climate change on the Baltic Sea ecosystem

Project: Breeding biology of the Baltic herring

  • Aim: Basic breeding biology of the Baltic herring (timing of breeding, the effect of the health of the parent fish on breeding success)

Project: Algae-algea eater -interactions in the littoral zone of the Baltic Sea

  • Aim: To study interactions between algae and algae-eating shellfishes and seashells

Project: The tolerance of Macoma balthica mussel against organic tin

  • Aim: To study the distribution of organic tin compounds (TBT and TPT) in the Archipelago Sea, and the effects on Macoma balthica mussel.
