"Jacquescousteaus" and other marine scientists of the Baltic Sea
Jacques Cousteau is the image of a typical marine scientist. Not all marine researchers share this image. Ecologists, geologist, hydrologists, archaeologists, even scientists in economy and political sciences work hard to resolve the problems of the Baltic Sea, and try to understand the underlying mechanisms.

Marine research has many other purposes as well:
- Ice and wave information improves navigation safety
- Data on fish stocks form the basis for sound fishing policy
- Cross-sectional research of ecology, economy and sociology sheds light into the protection measures and environmental policy making
There are many fields or subdisclipines in the marine research, such as:
- Oceanography: the multidisclipinary study e.g. on currents, waves and the physical properties of the sea
- Sea ecology: the study on the interaction between animals, plants and their environment
- Research on the threats of the sea, e.g. eutrophication, chemicals
- Maritime research: the study on shipping, martime safety, navigation and logistics
- Socio-economic research
- Sea archaeology: the study on shipwrecks, human artefacts, ancient habitation etc.
